Green Man Styles: Norwich Cathedral.

.
The Green Man left is a roof boss in Norwich Cathedral. His eyes bulging as foliage sprouts from his mouth and ears, growing upwards to encircle his head. His appearance is human and may have been based upon a particular person, his tortured face immortalised for all who gaze up in the cloisters to see. The roof boss dates from the 14 -15 centure CE.

Search for the Green Man and you will find he has many guises, in some representations he is human in form, others portray him as a 'wildman' or animal. The Green Man at St. Andrew's Church, Wood Dalling is very human in expression, he appears to be calling out or warning those who enter the church via the north door.

Tydd St. Giles Parish Church, Cambridgeshire.
This stylised Green Man form the font of Tydd St. Giles Parish Church is more 'wildman' in appearance, but still depicts foliage coming from the mouth and ears in common with many other types. Other Green Men on this site have foliage which sprouts from the eyes and nose as well as from the sinuses, however there are types of Green Man carvings where foliage is wreath-like with the face of the Green Man poking through and no foliage sprouts from the face.
