The Green Man Lincolnshire

St. Botolph, Boston.

There are many different styles of Green Men to be found at St. Bololph both inside and out.

Shown left is this Green Man leaf mask roof boss.

St. Botolph dates from 1310 CE and Boston is the place where the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for America.

 

St. Helen, Brant Broughton.

One of two Green Man roof bosses.

St Mary Magdalene, Gedney

One of a series of roof bosses, there are five in all.

 

St. Peter & St. Paul, Gosberton.

This rather serious Green Man can be found on the exterior of the south porch

A further Green Man (water spout) can be found on the north side of the church exterior.

 

Lincoln Cathedral

Located in the Morning Chapel (Chapel of St. Mary Magdelene)

Many other Green Men to be found in and around the cathedral.

 

All Saints, Moulton.

Green Man roof boss located at the west end of the church under the bell tower.

A second Green Man dating from c 1450 CE forms part of the rood screen decoration and can be seen facing towards the east window. See background image to this page.

St. Mary, Pinchbeck

This Green Man corbel can be found facing towards the nave, his nose resembles a tree branching out over the eyes to encircle his face.

All Saints, Stamford

Roof boss. A second roof boss with a more 'wildman' like Green Man and a further Green Man in the south chapel.

 

John the Baptist, Stamford.

Nave east, a Green Man above angel no 10. A key to the angels can be found on the nave wall.

St. Martin, Stamford

One of several Green Men on the box pews of St. Martin, all eaamples of Victorian carving.

A total of six Green Man carvings noted.

 

 

St. Mary the Virgin, Stamford.

The Corpus Christi Chapel has many carved Green Men. The chapel was added in the 15th c CE 'probably shortly before 1484'.

The chapel is usually kept locked but you can view the ceiling through the railings.

St. Mary the Virgin, Sutterton.

Found on the capitals of the left hand side pillar in the nave near to the north door is this interesting Green Man.
